It has been said, “The authority of the gospel is established by the authority of the Bible.” While the previous is an accurate statement, our view of the Bible will be influenced by our gospel experience. As we look upon the “Doctrines of the Apostles,” we discover that the Scripture is first and foremost to be read in light of the Spirit’s witness to Jesus Christ. In this series, we explore what the apostles, those who had firsthand record of the gospel from the view of Jesus Himself, really taught. It is obvious that the preaching of the gospel was intended to elicit a decision. That decision was much more than opting to “accept Jesus Christ as a personal Saviour”; it was a call to a new allegiance, a call to embrace the promised Messiah, and a call to follow Jesus Christ as Lord! It will be startling to learn what they actually taught, but much is also to be learned from what they did not teach. It may be as important to notice what is missing from their teachings as it is to know what is included in their original teachings. If we are to minister the grace of God effectively in our marketplaces, we must understand these very elementary doctrines of the original apostles. This series boldly declares what they said about the Church, the Kingdom, baptism, and what they did not say about heaven and hell. The original creed of the apostles was “Jesus Christ is Lord!” This is still the creed of all true Christians.
